Throughout the tenth edition of the Vendée Globe, the most prestigious of nautical races, “Le Temps” offers an immersive story by journalist Virginie Troussier. A series designed as both a sporting and philosophical exploration of the relationship between the sailor and the ocean
The series
They experienced the clouds, their play of light, their transparency and their uncertain density. While we imagine the navigators locked in their capsules, this last week they have often had to go out on deck to observe these masses which make the blue sky burst. Between Madeira and Cape Verde, the agitation of the sky gripped them every day. Great beauty, we thought, but in a minute the low, heavy cumulonimbus clouds plunged the ocean into shadow.
Then they flew away, thickening the horizon with darkness, lingering there, before returning, above the boats, like messengers of the wind. Capricious and subtle movements which never ceased to disconcert, to keep one in suspense, orchestrating the major maneuvers from above and tracing a scene at sea as random as it is exciting.
