Two works the james (also called Jimmy, Editor’s note) Butler have just joined the collections of the Blanche Hoschedé-Monet Museum.

“We can say that Jimmy is the grandson by marriage of Claude Monet », Indicates Nicolas Bondenet, director of the Vernon cultural establishment. The painter, born in Giverny in 1893, is the son of Theodore Earl Butler, also a painter, and nephew of Blanche Hoschedé-Monet.

“The museum, with its new name, aims to present the artistic creation that took place in Vernon and Giverny, and specifically the family saga whose work was presented in an exhibition in 2022,” explains Nicolas Bondenet.

Working with friends of the museum

These two new acquisitions were made possible by the support of the Society of Friends of the Museum.

“We are very happy to have once again contributed to the enrichment of the permanent collections. This is work that has been close to our hearts as an association since 1987 and its creation. In total, we financed or participated in the financing of 40 works “, confide Daniel Goupil and Iris Gengembre, active members of the society of friends of the museum for the Blanche Hochedé-Monet museum.

A partnership very dear to the City of Vernon.

As the owner of the museum, the City has a real role in building the collections and supporting research. It is a real pleasure to work together with the friends of the museum.

Nicole Balmary, deputy mayor in charge of heritage and culture.

The museum, which already holds two works by Claude Monet and the largest collection by Butler, is expanding its holdings.

Butler’s Largest Collection

” There is a family landscape traditionwe paint flowers and gardens. But also some portraits and self-portraits. We also find the particularity of doing animal art. These are therefore subjects that interest our museum,” underlines Nicolas Bondenet.

As for animal art, we find a drawing of two trout, purchased from the Piguet family. “It’s a very Japanese design, inspired by the prints that adorn Monet’s house. We understand this lineage and this artistic inspiration,” adds the museum director.

To this is added a tableau, made in 1920, which represents a typical landscape of the northern United States. The latter has not yet been hung and must first go through the restoration process. It will be visible to the public in the fall.
