LGBT flags flew this Saturday, June 29 in Biarritz. On the occasion of the pride march, more than 700 people marched in the city. For more than 20 years in France, this annual march has been an event that is both festive and protesting.

For Hash, 17 years old, non-binary and his group of friends, this day is even an outlet: “For me, it’s really important to be there, because it’s a day where I can really assert myself as who I really am. In high school, we often receive a lot of homophobic and sexist comments. We are in an art section and we often have these prejudices, like we’re gay, so we often get insulted or barked at in the hallways.”

A recent survey by Center LGBT+ Sud Aquitaine revealed 3/4 of LGBT+ people have already witnessed or been victims of physical violence in schools in the Basque Country. “We tell ourselves that we have been fighting for our rights for years, but I have the impression that those of LGBT people are regressing more and more. We have the impression that we are not listened to” , depicts Hash.

With his cheeks painted with the rainbow flag, Léo, 43, adds: “We cannot deny it, the current context is quite tense. There is still an increase in homophobic, racist or other acts, it’s scary. It’s not normal. In fact, I have the impression that we are currently regressing and it is worrying, very worrying.”

Advocating a speech of peace

This wish to be more listened to, more supported, is Léo’s desire: “It’s important to show that we are here, that we are united and that we are together and that yes, our differences are our strength. Everyone is free to do what they want with their sexuality and beyond that. Everyone is free to decide on their own life. I think that open-mindedness is extremely important to be able to exist together.” “We too are human and that’s quite simply why we are here today.” Hash concludes.
