Long considered a London ghetto, the Brixton district is today (still too) not very touristy, but appreciated by the locals. Historically populated by the Afro-Caribbean community, there is Caribbean cuisine and street art on every street corner.

Getting to Brixton

Brixton is a district in the south of the capital, located just 20 minutes from the center. Easily accessible by tube with the Victoria Line (Brixton station stop), or with the National Rail (Brixton stop).

The visit to make in Brixton

In the 80s, the council commissioned a series of murals to brighten up the neighbourhood’s streets, which were plagued by poverty and crime. Today, it is a street art museum whose works have been documented by the Brixton Society works on a Google Maps. The best known is undoubtedly the representation of David Bowie, in homage to this artist born in the neighborhood.

On Brixton Hill stands a windmill, built in 1816. Quite unexpected in central London, yet the mill is still used today to produce flour, although it runs on electricity. It is possible to visit for just £5a great activity to do with the children for an afternoon.

The market not to be missed in Brixton

Brixton Village, the neighborhood market, is a must-see when passing through the area, that’s for sure. Here, you’ll find designer boutiques with eclectic colors from Jamaica and the Caribbean. You can also find what you’re looking for in food or cosmetic products.

Every Monday evening there is a open mic night on the side of Hope & Anchora rather original pub. Entry is free, budding artist, it’s your time! This pub also organizes quiz nights every Wednesday and in the garden, there are small private cabins with TV screens to watch your favorite sporting events with friends!
