The Canada Day long weekend promises to be gray and rainy with the risk of thunderstorms in Quebec.

Large low pressure systems coming from Ontario and the United States will cover the entire province’s skies from Saturday to Sunday.

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for central and southern parts of the province, predicting heavy rain and accumulations of water throughout the weekend, but particularly Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

“Overall, a total of 20 to 40 mm is expected. However, scattered thunderstorms are expected to accompany the rain and these could increase the amounts received to more than 50 mm in some places in the south and centre of the province,” the agency announced.

“Significant accumulations of water are possible on roads and in land. In addition, the rain received could increase the flow and level of certain watercourses,” warned Environment Canada on Saturday morning.

In the Montreal and Quebec City areas, a slight chance of showers is expected Saturday morning, but the bulk of the precipitation will arrive late in the afternoon and thunderstorms could pass through overnight.

In the west of the province, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Outaouais, storms are expected from noon and will continue until Sunday morning.
