The small hamlet of Béasse, located between Lucéram and the Col de Turini near Nice (Alpes-Maritimes), is a ghost village, one of the few in the department.

Completely abandoned for almost a century, it once housed around sixty inhabitants during the French Revolution. A look back at its unique history.

A few houses still standing

Béasse, or Biassa, was built in the 1700s. It is one of six hamlets in the commune of Lucéram. But he particularly attracts attention. And for good reason: it is totally abandoned since its last inhabitants left it. In fact, for almost a century, no one has lived there. Except for a few squatters who have installed furniture there.

The houses today are nothing more than sad ruins. A spectacle that nourishes its name: a “ghost village”. Difficult to access, about ten houses remain (with difficulty) standing. Half of them are said to have burned down.

Béasse had the particularity of being totally autonomous: it produced its own crops and provided for the needs of its inhabitants who raised goatsits washhouse, its rainwater collection well, its bread ovenwhose utensils are always hanging and above all, schoolThey could produce up to 7 kilos of cheese per day.

A long hike to discover it

Located in the middle of the forest in a remote corner, it is a delight for hikers. A very famous walk going towards Peïra Cava for nature lovers who wish to discover this “ghost” village.

The hike is intended for seasoned walkers. Lasting almost 6 hours, it allows you to reach Peïra Cava from La Gabelle via Béasse. The opportunity to enjoy a breath of fresh air while admiring the setting simply incredible.

Landlocked, the former small village is now maintained by volunteers, without it being, for the moment, the subject of any renovation or rehabilitation project. Please note that it remains dangerous to venture into the ruins.
