18,000 people followed the Top 14 final this Friday evening from the Place du Capitole. The Toulousains beat Union Bordeaux Bègles soundly, 59 to 3.

“Magnificent”, “impressive”, “monstrous”: this is how the people of Toulouse present at the Capitole this Friday evening described the Top 14 final. Chants, shouts, dances, smoke bombs, red and black flags… the square witnessed a real explosion of joy. 18,000 people gathered there to see Stade Toulousain win its 23e shield of Brennus, on the big screen. Leelou, a supporter, is in tears at the end of the match: “It’s too emotional, we couldn’t have expected so much.” Hugo, whom we met a little further on, also loses his French: “I don’t have the words, it’s incredible. Compared to other years, I wasn’t stressed at all during this match.” And for good reason: Stade Toulousain scored 9 tries, and UBB… none. “It’s almost insulting for the Bordeaux team,” says Maguelone, another supporter. “We almost wanted to give them points.” Elie goes even further: “That much of a gap is humiliating. It may be mean to them, but the Toulouse team are too strong, above everything.”

At the Capitol six hours before kickoff

Two hours before the match kicked off, the start of hostilities began at 7 p.m. on the square, with a DJ set by Fabien Jora, entertainment and two presenters. “The supporters turned the Capitol upside down. Only in Toulouse can you see such a passionate audience,” says Sylvain, who hosted a blind test during half-time. “My heart is palpitating,” adds Sylvain, the second presenter. “It’s a pure pleasure to be here, the adrenaline is building to a crescendo before the start of the match.” And from the opening of the match, the tension continued to increase, since the Stadium scored a first try in the 5th minute of play.

Giant screen, cameras, lights, sounds: a very large device was installed in the most emblematic square of the Pink City. “A symbolic place” for Jonnhy Dunal, municipal councilor in charge of events. “The people of Toulouse have been waiting for this final for a long time. We are celebrating an exceptional year this evening,” he adds. Some arrived at the Capitol very early to take full advantage of the event. This is the case for Victor, who has been present since 2 p.m., six hours before kick-off. “I wanted to feel the magic, there is such a good atmosphere here,” he explains. “It’s even the best atmosphere in the world,” adds Carl, right next to it. Well used to fan zones, Clément also arrived very early: “It’s worth the wait to be right in front.” And they will be able to return to the square this Saturday, to see the Stade Toulousain players come and celebrate their victory.
