Three days before their scheduled move, there are still about twenty who don’t know where they’re going. “The situation is very difficult. We’ve been getting calls for a few weeks now and the tension is rising among tenants. They can’t find anything,” says Nicole Dionne, coordinator at the Bureau d’animation et information logement du Québec métropolitain (BAIL).

The latter points out that housing is becoming “excessively rare” in certain areas of the city. Rents have also exploded in recent years.

“Among the 19 households that we are currently supporting intensively, we are once again looking on a case-by-case basis. Are we able to look for permanent housing by July 1? Otherwise, we can turn to transitional emergency housing,” explains Marie-Christine Lamontagne, organizational development and communication advisor at the OMHQ.

A few days from the 1is July, the priority is that households have a roof over their heads and are safe, she notes.

Some tenants will be rehoused in conditions that are unattractive or inappropriate for their needs, says Ms. Dionne. This year many will turn to family members or friends. Tenants also informed them that they would be going to a campsite for the summer.

“The urgency of emergencies will be this this weekend, to make sure that no one loses their furniture on the sidewalk or sleeps under the bridges,” she continues.
