Hautes-Pyrénées: the project of a household waste treatment unit seriously studied in Lannemezan

A motion was unanimously passed to seriously study the project to create an energy recovery unit (ERU) in the north-east of the Hautes-Pyrénées.

What will be done with household waste in the Hautes-Pyrénées in a few years? A territorial study on the treatment of household waste to consider a sustainable solution was presented to the elected representatives of the Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées urban community (CATLP) by the mixed waste treatment union (SMTD) of the Hautes-Pyrénées and its president Philippe Baubay, mayor of Séméac.

Since the abandonment in 2017 of the waste treatment and recovery unit project in Bordères-sur-l’Échez, household waste from the Hautes-Pyrénées has been processed in the Toulouse metropolitan area, with the considerable transport costs that such “outsourcing” engenders.

An option for outsourcing waste treatment in the south of Landes

“But from 2033, we will no longer be able to process our waste in the Toulouse metropolitan area,” warned Rémi Carmouze, president of Symat (mixed waste collection union) which brings together 118 municipalities in the Hautes-Pyrénées, a large majority of which are in the CATLP territory. This is why the territorial study on the treatment of household waste carried out by the SMTD reviewed several scenarios, to consider the best solution.

The options for outsourcing the processing of more than 50,000 tonnes of waste from the Hautes-Pyrénées in Béarn and especially in the south of Landes, in the future energy recovery unit (UVE) of Bénesse-Maremne, have been seriously studied.

But the refusal to accept waste from outside by local populations and environmental associations and the cost of “outsourcing” have encouraged elected officials to consider a third scenario.

“Eight years is a minimum to build a project of such importance”

That of an energy recovery unit (UVE) in the Hautes-Pyrénées, in close collaboration with the Gers and the south of Haute-Garonne. “We thought about a barycenter in the east of the department, not too far from Haute-Garonne and the south of Gers, in a town which begins with L and ends with N” explains Philippe Baubay. Translate: in Lannemezan, whose mayor Bernard Plano is vice-president of SMTD 65. A motion was voted unanimously to seriously study the project of creating an energy recovery unit (UVE) in the north east of Hautes -Pyrenees.

“Eight years is not too much. It is a minimum to build a project of such importance” explained Jean-Claude Piron, vice-president of the CATLP in charge of the environment and ecological transition, who thanked all the elected officials for this motion of support. “But it will not be a long quiet river” warned the president of the CATLP, Gérard Trémège.
