There were around fifty of them this Friday lunchtime on Place Francheville in Périgueux around the stand of the Confédération Paysanne. Farmers from the union prepared 150 peasant burgers to denounce the installation of a Burger-King in the CGR premises, right next to the cinema, next fall. The union asked the CGR to give up selling the premises to the chain.

The union’s farmers denounce “junk food” and want to convince consumers, even the youngest, to eat healthy and local products. They cooked beef steaks from Julien’s farm in Saint-Aquilin. It is not difficult to convince Danielle who from time to time accompanies her grandchildren to fast food restaurants but doesn’t like it at all.

Intrigued middle school students

The college students present on Place Francheville are wondering what is going on. Every Friday lunchtime, they go to eat at a fast food restaurant because it’s cheaper. The menu offered by the farmers is 10 euros, a price almost equivalent to a menu in a chain, “they look good, and a lot for the price”.

The spokesperson for the Confédération Paysanne, François Soulard, wants to convince young people, he denounces industrial agriculture with which fast food restaurants operate and which “destroyed the peasants.” For François Soulard, installing a Burger-King in the city center of Périgueux would be a first and it is symbolic. For him, this shows that junk food is gaining ground.
