“It’s like I won the lottery”: the emotion of the brother of Juliette Goormans, found 1 and a half years after her disappearance

This Thursday, June 27, 2024, the prosecution announced that Juliette Goormans, a 19-year-old girl who had disappeared in 2022, had been found safe and sound in the Lyon region.

His family no longer dared to believe it. However, it is indeed true, young Juliette Goomans has indeed been found. At the microphone of -his big brother returns to his emotions: “I was at work and a colleague came to tell me that the media had just announced it. I don’t really know what to do. It’s like I’ve won the lottery.”

But this revelation does not close the investigation, which has been underway for more than a year and a half. The mystery still hangs over the case. The young girl disappeared on November 22, 2022, after leaving her school in Védrin, Belgium. She was last seen at a bus stop in the afternoon. Since then, radio silence. Even her grandfather and her half-brother, with whom the young woman was very close, had no news.

The hypothesis of a runaway had been favored. The young woman, suffering from a slight mental retardation, had a habit of running away. But after a week of absence, the concern had risen among one of her relatives.

A year and a half of absence

According to her family, there is a logical explanation behind every escape. But why this departure nearly 700 km from home? Nothing seems to explain it. The police had “received information”which had led to the discovery of Juliette at the home of the individual who was hosting her.

The person who took her in for almost a year is not an acquaintance of the family. How did she meet him? The young woman was nevertheless presented as shy and introverted, could she have left to find this man of her own choice? And what about the first six months of running away, when no one knows where she could have stayed?

The press magistrate specifies that the ongoing investigation “will in particular make it possible to clarify the exact circumstances of the disappearance, and the conditions in which Juliette Goormans was living with the French national.”

However, Juliette was free to move around during her disappearance. The young adult did not choose to return home to her family. She is an adult and is now free to disappear.”the magistrate said. His brother just hopes that nothing has happened to him during this long absence. “I want her to tell me first that everything is okay.” He also hopes to finally understand this long absence.
