Automotive safety recalls can affect any car on the road, even exotic or performance ones. This measure, mandatory when the safety of occupants and others is at risk, pushes manufacturers to make rather costly interventions. This is also the case for Porsche which, due to a problem in the braking system, will have to recall all of the Porsche Taycan sold in North America since 2020.

Loss of braking

The recall issued by Porsche and Transport Canada states that, on certain vehicles, the front brake lines may fail. This defect could then cause a progressive loss of brake fluid.

For the system to work properly, it must not lose fluid. If this happens, the feel and travel of the brake pedal could change. Even worse, this situation could also reduce braking ability.

Obviously, reduced braking capacity can then increase braking distances and increase the risk of an accident. This is all the more true in a car that can sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers/hour in less than 4 seconds!

In total, 3,204 Taycans are being recalled in Canada. This situation affects all models: Taycan, Taycan Cross Turismo, Taycan Cross Turismo Turbo and Taycan Turbo. Models from 2020 to 2024 are affected.

Porsche must notify owners by mail and ask them to come to the dealership to have their vehicle’s front brake lines replaced. An operation which will be paid for by Porsche and which should take around 2 hours.

Same problem in the United States

In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 31,689 Taycan cars will need this repair. In total, 150,000 cars are affected worldwide.

The recall documents warn owners that “if a certain amount of brake fluid is lost, various warning messages will be provided to the driver. Messages vary depending on the size of the leak and other factors, and may include ‘low brake fluid level’ or ‘PSM failure.'”

Apparently, if a yellow warning light flashes, owners can safely drive the Taycan to the dealership to have the lines replaced. Porsche said these tests showed that the rear braking system continues to work as expected.

However, if a red warning light comes on, the owner should have the car towed or call Porsche and not drive it.
