Carlo Alberton, director of Gris Chaudière-Appalaches, recalls the importance of LGBT+ pride celebrations, particularly in rural regions like Montmagny-L’Islet.

“The opposite of pride is shame,” says Alberton, noting that visibility and celebration are key to countering discrimination against people of sexual and gender diversity. “It’s incredibly important for a number of reasons, including the ability for people to come together, recognize each other and affirm each other socially,” he adds.

Montmagny-L’Islet’s geographic location adds a layer of complexity to the plurality of genders and sexual orientations. Geographic isolation reinforces the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people in these communities. Alberton notes that many people are still afraid to come out in their community, fearing stigma. “There is a need to normalize and fight against this invisibility,” he says.

Gris Chaudière-Appalaches plays a crucial role in this fight through training and awareness workshops. These initiatives allow young people to meet role models who look like them and to feel accepted and valued. Alberton shares testimonies from young people for whom these meetings were decisive.
“Meeting someone who is like them can change a lot of things in a person’s life.
young,” he said.

Despite growing acceptance, Alberton deplores a recent increase in homophobic and transphobic acts. “There is really a wave of backlash, not only in the United States, but also in Canada,” he explains. Gestures like tearing down pride flags demonstrate this tension.

In conclusion, Carlo Alberton invites the community and the media to continue supporting Gris Chaudière-Appalaches’ initiatives. “We have a lot of initiatives coming up,” he announces, emphasizing the importance of remaining visible and celebrating diversity in all sectors. (JST)
