SENEGAL-ELEVAGE / Dagana: transhumance on the decline, according to a breeder manager – Senegalese press agency

Dagana, June 27 (APS) – The fodder crop developed by companies including the Senegalese Sugar Company (CSS) has contributed to the decline in livestock transhumance in the Dagana department (north), declared Mohamed Abiboulaye Ndiaye, a livestock leader.

“For a very long time, herders have not transhumant in the department of Dagana. Transhumance is no longer what it was yesterday, this is due to many companies, notably the Senegalese Sugar Company (CSS)”, he declared.

He was speaking at a press briefing following the drop in prices of basic necessities. Mr. Ndiaye welcomed the State’s initiatives, inviting it to collaborate more with industrialists in the interest of the department’s breeders.

According to him, the CSS played an important role in the settlement of breeders, thanks to access to water and fodder cultivation granted to these vulnerable groups.

“We welcome the initiative of the new authorities with the enormous efforts made to reduce basic necessities,” he stressed, inviting them to discuss further with companies in the general interest of industrialists, breeders and the local population.

He also asked the State to provide more support to companies for the benefit of the populations of Dagana, which is today a social demand because the presence of these companies impacts breeders and farmers, according to him.
