Funding for francisation down while demand is growing

The Sherbrooke Region School Services Center (CSSRS) will soon find itself with a significant shortfall in terms of francization.

For the next school year, Quebec’s funding is being revised downward and will correspond to the amounts allocated in 2020-2021.

Amounts which are calculated based on 150 full-time equivalent students.

In recent years, budgets have followed suit. We know that there are significant waves of immigration to Quebec, to Canada. Francization budgets have always been associated based on registrations and demand. There, we are informed that the funding we will receive for the next year is the funding we received four years ago. In four years, however, the number of students has more than doubled and even this year, the establishment had 351.

We will have to consider that during the year, at some point, the envelope will be exhausted and we will have to place people on a waiting list. During this time, people will live here with all the challenges that not knowing the language can represent.explains Donald Landry.

According to the latter, the amounts less at the Sherbrooke Region School Service Center for the next year represent approximately two million dollars.
