Alma today presented three initiatives aimed at honoring the memory of Alma actor Michel Côté, who passed away on May 29, 2023.
At a press conference, the municipality revealed the artist selected to create the monumental fresco bearing the image of the actor known in particular for his role in the play Broue, but also for his numerous comic roles on the small screen.
This is the Quebec artist Kevin Ledo, recognized internationally for his contributions to mural festivals and public art. He will be supported by two assistants, artist from L’Ascension Shana Patry and artist Jamie Janx Johnston.
Fourteen applications were submitted. Kevin Ledo was chosen in accordance with the recommendation of the selection committee, chaired by Maxime Le Flaguais, Michel Côté’s son. The artist’s portfolio and style were taken into account in particular.
The work, described as a “world-class mural,” will be painted on one of the walls of the Paul-Tremblay building, which will give it great visibility. The first brush stroke will be given on August 19. Kevin Ledo and his assistants will work day and night to complete the 53 ft. x 35 ft. mural in ten days.
Michel Côté Scholarship
The second initiative consists of the creation of a permanent scholarship of $1000 in the name of Michel Côté. This will be aimed at post-secondary students in theater or cinema.
The scholarship was created thanks to the Arts Fund of the Alexis-le-Trotteur Foundation and aims to support emerging regional artists.
Identification of a seat at Salle Michel-Côté
Finally, as part of the third initiative, Alma will equip one of the seats in Salle Michel-Côté with a plaque on which we can read the following statement: “Michel Côté will always have his place among us”.
The seat will be reserved for the actor’s mother for all performances scheduled by Ville d’Alma Spectacles.
