Banned for sale for a week, gastropods from the Thau pond can once again be consumed without risk. For mussels and clams, we will still have to wait for further analyses.

It is once again possible to consume gastropods from the Etang de Thau without risk. For a week, they were banned from fishing, sale and consumption, just like mussels and clams. The cause is too high a level of toxins.

The culprit is actually phytoplankton: a natural part of the marine ecosystem that can temporarily produce toxins. When these accumulate in shellfish, they become unfit for human consumption.

Samples taken this Monday, June 24 show that the quantity of toxin is now below the regulatory threshold on these three shellfish. However, pending a second favorable result, the prefecture has decided to maintain restrictions on mussels and clams.

Oysters are not affected by this contamination. While waiting for new results for mussels and clams, we can enjoy whelks and oysters without fear!

However, the prefecture calls on people who have consumed mussels, clams or gastropods caught after June 17 and who have digestive problems to consult a doctor.
