The most beastly of BMW 5 Series will enter this year in a 7e generation. With 40 years of history under the hood, the BMW M5 2025 returns to Canada powered, for the first time, by a plug-in hybrid powertrain. According to BMW, this new edition of its high-performance sedan marks another step in BMW M’s evolution towards electrification. The combination of internal combustion engine and electric motor in the new 2025 BMW M5 is closely related to the drive system of the BMW M Hybrid V8 endurance race car.

A ton of technologies that enhance its performance

BMW has not skimped on the technologies intended to ensure the car’s performance. Under the hood of the car, we find a plug-in hybrid M engine whose centerpiece is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine whose efficiency has been improved and which generates, on its own, a power of 577 horsepower and a torque of 553 pound-feet from 1,800 rpm. Its sound is enhanced by an electronically controlled exhaust which can let gases escape more freely.

To complete this engine, a more compact electric motor is positioned between the combustion engine and the 8-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox. It adds 207 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.

All in all, the 2025 BMW M5 is the most powerful ever produced with 717 total horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, no less. M xDrive all-wheel drive is offered as standard; the car can thus complete the sprint from 0 to 100 kilometers/hour in around 3.5 seconds, according to the manufacturer. The car also features an electronically locking active differential specially adapted to the M hybrid drive system. It is installed on the rear axle to improve traction, agility and directional stability.

A range of 40 kilometers

The energy required by the electric propulsion system is stored in a high-voltage 14.8 kilowatt-hour battery placed under the floor of the car in order to maintain a lower center of gravity while not reducing space on board. According to BMW, the estimated electric range based on criteria established by the EPA will be 40 kilometers. The car will be able to travel in electric mode up to a speed of 140 kilometers/hour.

The hybrid system will be able, through the 5 modes, to maximize electric driving for better economy or to promote pure power.

Based on the new generation 5 Series, the 2025 BMW M5 benefits from the same lines, but its unique character is highlighted by several accessories and equipment that make its presentation more dynamic and contribute to its superior performance. Its 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear also distinguish it from regular liveries.

How much does the 2025 BMW M5 cost?

The car will be sold in Canada towards the end of 2024; its base price will be $135,000, excluding shipping and preparation costs.

The new BMW M5 will be presented for the first time at the Festival of Speed in Goodwood, England, a mecca for power and performance. Production of the car will begin this summer at the BMW group plant in Dingolfing, while the global launch of the new BMW M5 will take place in November 2024.

For the moment, only the sedan has been confirmed by the brand, but we know that BMW is gauging buyer interest before offering the wagon, the BMW M5 Touring, in North America.
