The route of the Tour de France 2024, step by step

Stage 1 (June 29): Florence-Rimini, 206km ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

After leaving the Spanish Basque Country in 2023, this 2024 Tour de France will start from Tuscany. And the hors d’oeuvres are likely to be tasty for the peloton, with a first stage which will immediately immerse the riders in the deep end. With 3,600m of positive altitude difference, it will be nothing less than the most rugged first stage in the history of the Tour. The arrival in Rimini will sound like a tribute to Marco Pantini, who died in the Italian seaside resort.

Stage 2 (June 30): Cesenatico-Bologna, 198.7km ⭐⭐⭐⭐

After this muscular start, the peloton will tackle a second solid piece with a stage for punchers. Six difficulties scattered throughout the 200km stage, including the famous Cima Gallisterna on the heights of Imola, where Julian Alaphilippe won the first of his two world titles in 2020. The San Luca hill and its more than 10 % average, which the riders will swallow twice in the final, should serve as a justice of the peace.

Stage 3 (July 1): Plaisance-Turin, 230.5km ⭐

It’s the sprinters’ turn to shine with a 3rd stage without much difficulty which will take the peloton to Turin for what will be the longest stage of this 2024 Tour de France. A first shot for the contenders for the prestigious green jersey.

Stage 4 (July 2): Pinerolo-Valloire, 139.6km ⭐⭐⭐

The last of the four Italian stages, and the first of the Alpine stages. The mountains will indeed arrive very early on this 2024 Tour de France, with three difficulties on the menu for this 4th stage, including the terrible Galibier and its 23km of climbing. Enough to offer the perfect terrain for a first explanation between contenders for the yellow jersey.

Stage 5 (July 3): Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne-Saint-Vulbas, 177.4km ⭐

A second cartridge for the sprinters in this stage which will lead the peloton from the Maurienne valley to the Ain plain, with an arrival in Saint-Vulbas, which will host the Tour de France for the first time. No major difficulties on the menu, enough for a good nap.

Stage 6 (July 4): Mâcon-Dijon, 163.5km ⭐

A second stage for sprinters in two days, even flatter than a vinaigrette without (Dijon) mustard. The Philipsen, De Lie, Cavendish, Démare, Coquard, Groenewegen and company will not miss this dream opportunity to bring back a bouquet.

The profile of stage 6 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 7 (July 5): Nuits-Saint-Georges-Gevrey-Chambertin (individual clm), 25.3km ⭐⭐⭐

A short time which promises to be explosive. In the majestic setting of the Burgundy Grands Crus route, this time trial is designed for specialists in the discipline. For the favorites, although the temptation to stop in one of the cellars along the road for a little tasting will be great, it will above all be about scraping precious seconds off their direct competitors.

Stage 8 (July 6): Semur-en-Auxois-Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, 183.4km ⭐⭐

The ultimate nail-biting stage, which the best adventurers in the peloton will necessarily have ticked off on their calendar. Almost not a gram of flat ground throughout these 183km which will take the riders to the stronghold of General de Gaulle, in front of whose house the Tour de France stopped to greet him during the 1960 edition. But watch out for the the strongest of the sprinters, who will try to hang on to settle the matter in the finale.

Stage 9 (July 7): Troyes-Troyes, 199km ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The step that everyone is waiting for. A kind of mini-Strade Bianche in the middle of the Champagne vineyards, like a new tribute to a Tuscany that is definitely in the spotlight in this 2024 edition. The 14 sectors of sandy vineyard paths will put the best drivers of the peloton in the spotlight and the favorites’ teams on edge. Because for the latter, it will above all be a question of trying not to lose this Tour more than to win it.

July 8: day of rest

Stage 10 (July 9): Orléans-Saint-Amand-Montrond, 187.3km ⭐⭐

A stage designed for the big thighs of the peloton, who will have been able to recharge their batteries during the rest day. But show-goers would be wrong to set their alarm to aim to turn on their TV 10km before the finish: the roads of Berry, open to the winds, will offer the perfect playground for ambitious teams to attempt edge shots and traps. one or more favorites.

The profile of stage 10 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 11 (July 10): Évaux-les-Bains-Le Lioran, 211km ⭐⭐⭐

4350m of positive altitude difference spread over six difficulties listed for this demanding stage which will visit the green landscapes of the Massif Central. If the passes climbed do not seem selective enough to carry out a real sorting among the contenders for the general classification, this 11th stage should whet the appetites of fans of long-distance escapes, who could obtain an exit voucher.

The profile of stage 11 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 12 (July 11): Aurillac-Villeneuve-sur-Lot, 203.6km ⭐⭐

The peloton will switch to the other side of the Massif Central on the roads of Lot and Lot-et-Garonne, where the heat could play a role. The sprinters will however see this as an opportunity to add another stripe to their shoulders, if they manage to control the race and avoid a solo escapee, as was the case during the two previous stages concluded in the streets of Villeneuve-sur-Lot (1996 and 2000).

Stage 13 (July 12): Agen-Pau, 165.3km ⭐

A final respite before the great Pyrenean explanation. The favorite teams should take no risks and waste no energy before the weekend’s copious mountain menu. The perfect opportunity for the rockets of the peloton to enjoy a royal sprint in the streets of Pau, dear to Henri IV.

The profile of stage 13 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 14 (July 13): Pau-Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, 151.9km ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A great classic of the Pyrenees, with two exceptional passes, including the legendary Tourmalet. Very heavy, in short. For the favorites, it will be a question of showing themselves or hanging on, depending on their state of form. The climb towards Pla d’Adet, and its terrible percentages in its first part, could do great damage.

The profile of stage 14 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 15 (July 14): Loudenvielle-Plateau de Beille, 197.7km ⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐

The queen stage of this Tour de France 2024. Nearly 5000m of positive altitude difference, four first category passes to whet your appetite, before an exceptional finale on the climb of the Plateau de Beille (15.7km at 7, 8% on average and peaks of more than 12%). Pure violence for the tested bodies of the riders in the peloton. In short, a July 14th in the form of fireworks.

July 15: day off

Stage 16 (July 16): Gruissan-Nîmes, 188.6km ⭐⭐

The last cartridge for the sprinters, which the Pyrenean sequence will necessarily have blunted. Only those will remain whose dream of arriving in Nice in green will have kept alive on the terrible slopes of the 15th stage. But the fatigue of the big thighs of the peloton could offer a good card to a group of escapees capable of resisting them.

The profile of stage 16 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 17 (July 17): Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux-Superdévoluy, 177.8km ⭐⭐⭐

The Tour will visit the Hautes-Alpes for a 17th stage designed for a long-distance escape. If the favorites will be tempted to observe each other while waiting for the final Alpine bouquet, today’s stage could be offered to a climber who has lost all chance of doing well overall.

The profile of stage 17 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 18 (July 18): Gap-Barcelonnette, 179.5km ⭐⭐⭐

The archetype of the mid-mountain stage, perfect for backpackers. Five difficulties listed on the menu, and one last chance for the teams who do not yet have a bouquet in the vases on their bus. The sprinters most comfortable in the bumps will try to take the right car to play their card on a relatively flat finish.

The profile of stage 18 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 19 (July 19): Embrun-Isola 2000, 144.6km ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The justice of the peace for this Tour de France 2024. With two out-of-category passes, including a passage at an altitude of more than 2800m via the highest paved road in France on the Cime de la Bonette side, the peloton will come up against the very, very high mountain. Arrival at Isola 2000 will only be possible for an exceptional climber as the menu offered is gargantuan.

The profile of stage 19 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 20 (July 20): Nice-Col de la Couillole, 132.8km ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A last one before we go. Before the final time in the streets of Nice, the favorites will face off in a final tussle which could be divided into two races: one for the stage victory and one for the general classification. Depending on the size of the gap between the yellow jersey and its runner-up, the race could become significantly tenser and the attacks multiply.

The profile of stage 20 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

Stage 21 (July 21): Monaco-Nice (individual clm), 33.7km ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The final bouquet. 35 years after the cruel outcome of the 1989 Tour de France lost by Laurent Fignon by eight miserable seconds, the 2024 edition returns with a final time trial. With his demanding profile and riders of the caliber of Pogacar, Vingegaard, Roglic or Evenepoel, he could reshuffle all the cards and dynamite the podium. An arrival that promises to be unbreathable.

The profile of stage 21 of the Tour de France 2024 – ASO

In total, no less than 3,492km of racing await the riders of this 2024 Tour de France.
