Discreet for two years in the body of water on Charlemagne Island, cyanobacteria are making a comeback, as revealed by a check carried out on Wednesday June 26.

It’s a great comeback that the Métropole d’Orléans would have done well with as the summer season approaches, and we’re not talking about the return of the sun: cyanobacteria are making headlines again, on the body of water in Charlemagne Island, at the Loire Park in Saint-Jean-le-Blanc.

A regulatory check carried out by the Centre-Val de Loire Regional Health Agency (ARS) on Wednesday, June 26, revealed their excessive presence. The results presented by the ARS highlight the exceeding of the management threshold of 0.3 µg/l for cyanotoxin, with a content of 0.41 µg/l.

Nautical activities and fishing maintained

Due to the health risk, the prefecture and the ARS have therefore requested the closure of swimming to the public. Water activities remain possible, except paddle and wingfoil. “Users are invited not to ingest water and take a careful shower after nautical activity. Fishing is also possible, but the consumption of fishing products is suspended,” explains the Metropolis.

Cyanobacteria have regularly appeared in recent years on this body of water, but since 2022, the situation has improved, with measures taken around flood structures to facilitate the circulation of water, plantations, a resumption of banks to limit sediments…

New analyzes will take place on Friday June 28, and throughout the season, regular regulatory monitoring will be carried out by the ARS, with monitoring of cyanobacteria and microbiological analyses.
