Municipal elections: Paul Magnette (PS) ‘will decide at the end of the summer’ whether he will run as mayor of Charleroi

Paul Magnette, president of the PS and outgoing mayor of Charleroi, will decide “at the end of summer“if he will be a candidate for his own succession at the head of the town of Hennuyère during the municipal elections of October 13, he indicated Tuesday evening on the set of RTL-TVi.

While waiting for this deadline, the socialist will take the oath in the Chamber where he was elected on June 9. “I will take the oath of office in the Federal Parliament. I will take leave from my mandate as mayor during the holidays, as I do every summer. And then, we will decide at the end of the summer“, did he declare.

In accordance with the party’s internal rules, the socialist cannot combine his mandates as federal deputy and mayor of Charleroi. The PS, now the second French-speaking party, has decided to sit in opposition at all levels of power. The door, however, remains open in the Brussels Region, where an MR-Les Engagés majority – like those being built in Wallonia and in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation – is not mathematically possible.

It turns out that Ecolo and DéFI have decided to go into opposition. And so there is almost no one left to govern Brussels. We are a responsible party. We are not going to paralyze the institutions. If we need socialists, we will be there… but not to do anything“, he warned, citing free public transport, social housing or even “salaries“.
