In its bulletin, Air Pays de la Loire indicates that the air quality index is poor in the region and particularly in Nantesce mardi 25 et Wednesday June 26. The index is yellow for today and turns red tomorrow. According to the surveys, this pollution is linked to a concentration too important d’ozone.

This one is a secondary pollutantformed by reaction with the presence of UV rays from the sun and from precursors (nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, etc.) of automotive and industrial origin.

The concentration d’ozone in the air increases with sunshine and rising temperatures, as has been the case in recent days.

What health risks ?

Capable of penetrating deep into the lungs, at high concentrations ozone causes inflammation and an hyperreactivity of the bronchi.

Of the irritations of the nose and throat usually occurs, accompanied by difficulty breathing. Irritations eyepieces are also observed.

Ozone has adverse effects on vegetation and disrupts the growth of certain species (decreased yields, leaf necrosis, etc.).

It contributes to thegreenhouse effect. It attacks and degrades certain materials: rubber for example.

What is the air quality index?

The air quality index is a simplified daily indicator, intended to inform citizens of the quality of the air they breathe. It corresponds to the maximum of the 5 sub-indexes determined for 5 air pollutants:

  • ozone (O3) – daily maximum
  • nitrogen dioxide (NO2) – daily maximum
  • sulfur dioxide (SO2) – daily maximum
  • PM10 particles – daily average
  • fine PM2.5 particles – daily average
