School tax

The average account in Quebec, which is currently $355, will increase by $10 to $365 in 2024-2025.

The government is acting again this year to limit the increase in the school tax bill to 3% on average. The Minister of Finance, Eric Girard, and the Minister of Education, Bernard Drainville, announce that the school tax rate will increase from $0.09730 to $0.09152 per $100 of assessment and that the lack to be gained will be met by additional financial assistance of $150 million granted to school service centers.

Thus, the average account in Quebec, which is currently $355, will increase by $10 to stand at $365 in 2024-2025. Without this intervention, the average tax bill would have increased by 15%, or $54.

Remember that the government already pays school service centers a subsidy of around $1.8 billion each year in order to reduce Quebecers’ school tax bill and maintain a single tax rate across Quebec.

In place since July 2020, the single tax rate fluctuates each year according to the cost of the local needs of all school service centers and the variation in the property value base.

The additional grant of $150 million to school service centers announced will bring government assistance for financing local needs to nearly $2 billion per year.
