It’s now official: the Canigou has indeed moved. The sacred mountain of the Catalans, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, now culminates at 2,784.70 meters above sea level. Setting out on an expedition a few days ago, surveyors were able to measure this emblematic summit which dominates the Roussillon plain and Perpignan.

The Canigou moved a centimeter

Twenty years after its last official measurement (2,784.66m in 2004, Editor’s note), the Canigou therefore moved four centimeters. Well, not quite… The Canigou really only moved one centimeter. It is above all the level of the earth that has evolved. In 20 years, she has gained three centimeters. Today, Canigou officially peaks at 2,784.70 meters.

Its peak is always close to 2,785 meters above sea level, and remains at 36e place in the ranking of the highest peaks of the Pyrénées-Orientales, far behind the pic Carlit and his 2,921 meters.

Sometimes visible from Marseille, Canigou (officially written Canigó) nonetheless remains the best-known mountain in the department.

To carry out this measurement, a group of 25 passionate surveyors, with “experienced hikers but also beginners eager to take up the challenge” led a two-day expedition to the summit. The latter were able to rely on cutting-edge technology to define the new altitude of Canigou.
