On the outskirts of Lunain, in the 12th centurye century, a square fortress, without a keep, was built to defend the passage, in the town of Paley (Seine-et-Marne). Elements of this original construction remain in the courtyard : a square of massive walls with a walkway, an imposing tower that served as a dovecote and a vaulted cellar. Later, under the reign of Charles VI, the main building was destroyed then rebuilt, before being completely remodeled in the 19th century.e century. The medieval walls and the dovecote, listed since 1987, preserve the castle's fortified character, particularly on the side visible from the road, dating from the 18th century.
Unique artist residency project
Ismaël, originally from Fontainebleau and fascinated by the Middle Ages, discovered this exceptional place with his partner Laurie. Amazed, they decided to settle in this old commandery to carry out a cultural and artistic project. “ This place offers an atmosphere conducive to disconnection, concentration and creativity,” confides Ismaël, who feels a particular connection with this site, even evoking a historical connection with the ancient lords of Paley. Laurie, trained in Fine Arts and engaged in art through her Parisian cultural venue, also finds here the ideal space to develop a unique artist residency project.
For three years, the castle has hosted various events: residencies for dancers from the National Ballet of Paris, excerpts from plays such as La Traviataprivate parties, concerts and activities for children. For Halloween, the couple hit it hard by opening the courtyard doors for a magical evening, with a large audience.
Restoration work begins to renovate the roof and plumbing.
Laurie and Ismaël pursue their dream of breathing new life into the castle. Their ambition is to restore a cultural and natural splendor to this place, so that the castle shines well beyond its walls and its past.
