This week, remember to bring out your best windbreaker. Due to a cold low pressure corridor installed over the northern half of Europe and descending on France during the day on Monday, it is cold, rainy and soon windy in part of the country.
And gust of wind is particularly expected during the night from Monday to Tuesday. “There may be vigilance that will fall on certain departments,” automatically warns meteorologist Guillaume Séchet, interviewed by actu.fr.
Windy activity which strengthens Monday afternoon
If you live in the northern half of France, you will have noticed it since this morning: this Monday, November 18, 2024 is gray and rainy. This is due to a conflict between cold air originating from the North Sea and Norway and milder air present in France.
“This air mass conflict leads to heavy rain in the far north and a gust of wind”, continues the founder of the site meteo-villes.com withactu.fr. This is confirmed by Météo France in its mid-day forecasts.
In the rain, the west to southwest wind is 40 to locally 60 km/h during the day. This evening, near the Channel, the rainy and windy activity is increasing: the storm may rumble and the gusts reach 60 to 80 km/h.
Mistral and tramontane are also present in the South-East, with gusts close to 50/60 km/h. In Corsica, “westerly gusts reach 70 km/h”.
“Up to 100 km/h inland” Tuesday
You have to wait until the night of Monday to Tuesday for windy activity gets tougher Again. “We will be on the verge of a storm on the coast of the Channel,” opines Guillaume Séchet.
“In the morning, it blows between 50 and locally 70 km/h, sometimes up to 80/90 on the Channel coast. In the afternoon, gusts reach 60 to 80 km/h inland, locally 90 km/h in the heaviest rain, on the coasts and the relief,” Météo France anticipates for Tuesday.
There could even be “gusts of up to 100 km/h inland”adds Guillaume Séchet. The next day too, keep your windbreaker on. Especially in the South-West, Auvergne Rhône-Alpes and the interior of the Paca region.
Wednesday November 21, 2024, the wind blows in gusts of 70 to locally 90 km/h, sometimes at more than 100 km/h on the Auvergne and Alpine terrain with a risk of surges on Limagne.
Up to 150 km/h wind in Corsica
It is la Corse which will be the most swept by the winds, “still due to this low pressure corridor which blows on the coasts of the Channel then, due to a change in flow, descends Tuesday afternoon on the South-East then on Corsica », underlines the meteorologist Yann Amice toactu.fr.
On the relief and to the north of the island of beauty, we can see “120 to 150 km/h in gusts, and more than 150 on Cap Corse »observes Météo France. “A city like Bastia will see gusts of 130/140 km/h,” adds Yann Amice.
Vigilance soon activated by Météo France?
Guillaume Séchet does not rule out Météo France triggering alerts in certain departments. Already, in its forecasts for Monday, the national weather institute has placed all the northern half of France on yellow alert for violent winds.
The departments of Normandy and Hauts-de-France on the coast are also on yellow alert for rain-flooding and/or risk of waves-submersion.
This gust of wind, however, is not not exceptional. “It’s quite classic for a month of November, where there are successive periods of depressions, disturbances and sustained gusty winds,” concludes Yann Amice.
