The mayor of Annemasse, a French town which borders Geneva, is campaigning for the creation of a “cross-border citizen card”. Christian Dupessey developed his idea in the pages of “Courrier”. He would see a symbolic advantage: developing a feeling of belonging to the territory of Greater Geneva. But it is above all the practical aspect which stands out: the elected official imagines that holders of the sesame could have free access to public services on both sides of the border.

He explains that this is already the case for mobility (a Léman Express ticket is valid in France as in Switzerland), but not for health, in particular. For example, French residents do not have extensive access to the Geneva hospital system, except for emergencies and certain treatments such as dialysis. Christian Dupessey would like this to change. He admits that money is the crux of the matter here, and that the main obstacles are to be found on the French side: French health insurance is currently refusing to reimburse Swiss care billed more expensively than that provided in France. On the other hand, he believes that State Councilors Pierre Maudet and Antonio Hodgers are involved in the Greater Geneva project and “determined to make things happen”.
