The target of the Russian-Ukrainian injured on June 3, while he was making an explosive device in his hotel room in the commune of Roissy-en-France (Val-d’Oise), was not strategic. According to information from the Monde, the first elements of the investigation indicate that he was preparing to commit an attack against a Bricorama store located in a commercial area in the north of the capital. However, this action would be part of a vast sabotage campaign orchestrated from Moscow and targeting several European countries.

On June 3, late in the afternoon, a sturdy 26-year-old man of Ukrainian and Russian nationality was taken to a hospital in Oise by the firefighters for burns on his upper body, face and head. They were apparently caused, he said at first, by an accidental explosion. But the curious circumstances of the incident and the suspicious profile of the character led the emergency services to report the case to the gendarmerie, which quickly contacted the General Directorate of Internal Security (DGSI).

Arrested in his hospital room and placed in police custody, he initially denied any criminal intent. But the seizures made in his hotel room will contradict his statements. Investigators got their hands on false papers, products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, mobile phones and found traces of ammonium nitrate. The man was indicted and imprisoned on June 7, for “criminal terrorist association”, “possession of a substance or explosive with a view to preparing destruction or harm to people, in relation to a terrorist enterprise”.

The investigations then lifted the veil on the aborted operation. According to a source close to the investigation, he intended to place his homemade bomb in the early hours of the morning on the site of a Bricorama, before it opened. A clarification that would attest to his desire to cause only material damage and avoid any loss of human life.

Arriving a few days earlier on French soil, he allegedly prepared his attack without visible help from the outside. Despite his lack of knowledge of the French language, he himself bought his phones and the materials necessary to make his explosive device. The suspect was injured by the accidental triggering of the homemade explosive, made from TATP, a very unstable product, associated with a mobile phone.
