The A83 motorway was temporarily closed to traffic on Wednesday June 19, 2024 at the end of the afternoon in the Niort-Nantes direction, after a heavy goods vehicle caught fire near Villiers-en-Plaine: the closure lasted a good half hour, with Bison Futé announcing a reopening a little after 7 p.m.

The truck driver was able to stop his livestock trailer truck, which was transporting 26 cows according to the gendarmes of the La Crèche motorway platoon, on the emergency lane: it was about a kilometer after the area rest area of ​​Parthenaise, located in the territory of the commune of Faye-sur-Ardin.

Traffic possible on one lane

A plume of black smoke then emerged from the heavy truck: the firefighters, who came at 24, extinguished the fire. The 54-year-old driver escaped unhurt and was left at the scene. As for cattle, the report communicated by the emergency services showed seven deaths, three others having to be euthanized. In addition to firefighters and the gendarmerie, teams from Vinci Autoroutes were mobilized

After the temporary closure, which included a compulsory exit at the same time as a prohibited entry at Échiré – Niort Nord – depending on the direction of traffic, the A83 is once again accessible in the area. But only on the left lane for the moment.
