The environmental group wants to warn about the climate crisis.

After Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Magna Carta, the megaliths of Stonehenge! Two activists from the environmental organization Just Stop Oil were arrested on Wednesday for spraying paint on the monoliths of the famous English prehistoric site of Stonehengewhich is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for the summer solstice, police and the group said.

In a statement, police in Wiltshire, in the southwest of England, said they were called around 12 p.m. (11 a.m. GMT) and arrested two suspects, while Just Stop Oil, which calls for an end to exploitation fossil fuels, claimed the action, ensuring that the powder paint, based on corn flour, used “would soon leave with the rain”.

Stonehenge is protected by the ancient monuments act and it is a criminal offence to damage the Stones. There are also multiple rare lichen species growing on the stones that are also protected. Expect a prison sentence. \ud83d\ude21 https://t.co/4sFprTUwUi

On X, the information blog on Stonehenge, recalls that the site is “protected by the Ancient Monuments Act and it is a criminal offense to damage the stones” and specifies that there is also “several rare species of lichens growing on the stones which are also protected”.

The Just Stop Oil activists are used to this type of strong action to alert public opinion.
