Ardèche: birth of a female white rhino in Peaugres, first animal without a first name at the safari park

This female white rhino was born at the Peaugres safari park in Ardèche on June 2 around 5 p.m. after 16 months of gestation. But the birth was so rapid that the caregivers did not have time to place the mother in the shelter provided for this purpose. The little one was therefore born outside and under the eyes of a few visitors present in front of the rhino enclosure. The mother and her daughter were then placed in a large enclosure out of sight so as not to stress the mother. But the little female is doing like a charm, so she will be visible again in the enclosure accessible to visitors from this Wednesday, June 19.

No first name

The Peaugres safari park is used to the births of wild animals, but for the first time this little white rhino will not be given a first name. This is a recommendation from the ethics committee of the Wow group (owner of the safari park) to avoid the phenomenon of anthropomorphism. That is to say, attributing to animals reactions and feelings specific to the human species.

Exceptional birth

This birth is therefore exceptional in several respects. This is the first of a white rhino in Peaugres this year. The animal does not have a first name for the first time in the Park, last but not least, white rhinos are an endangered species. Less than 20 thousand individuals live in the natural environment. This birth is therefore one more step towards saving the species.
