A Sunday morning in the shared garden

“Why is this plant called a sunflower? », asks Rémi the gardener. “Because it follows the sun!” », responds straight away, Eric, 5 years old. He could also have said it in Spanish, because the toddler is perfectly bilingual thanks to his Madrilenian mother.

Sunday morning, May 26, Mother’s Day, Rémi Duché, the organizer of the shared garden (also a municipal councilor), welcomed a small troop of gardeners, shovels and buckets in hand, ready to plant flowers and vegetables. season. A first lesson in natural science, so to speak, for these children who will later find, in school textbooks, what they have experienced “for real”, as they say.

This garden was created in 2021 under the leadership of Professor Pascale Lamoine, deputy mayor responsible, among other things, for sustainable development. Not quite like the others, it is installed on the site of the Palay village hall, on the borders of the Paul-Simonet orchard, since it is an “observation garden and not a food garden,” recalls the elected official.

“Trying to understand”

“It is not there to meet the needs of self-sufficient people, but to watch, observe, try to understand the complexity of nature and its phenomena,” insists Pascale Lamoine. A variation of traditional gardening which may surprise and which could perhaps explain the low number of participants who have launched, through their involvement, into a sort of apostolate towards the younger generations.

“If we sometimes have the impression that the garden is fallow, this can be explained in different ways,” analyzes Rémi. The incessant rains prevented us from intervening. The only solution was to wait until the weather was better, as it is true that while rain can be a blessing, it can also be a calamity. »

In any case, on Sunday morning, our budding gardeners ignored all these contingencies, before returning, in a few months, to reap the fruit of their labor.
