Former Moroccan international Hassan Akesbi died on Saturday following a long illness, we learned from the Mohammed VI Foundation of Sports Champions.


National football is in mourning. He lost one of his figures, Hassan Akesbi. Born on May 1, 1935 in Tangier, the deceased began his career in 1950 at the Sevillana Tangier club, before joining the ranks of FUS Rabat. He subsequently played for the French club Nîmes Olympique, where he scored 119 goals in 204 matches, a performance which earned him the title of top scorer in the history of the French club. Hassan Akesbi, president of the association of former FUS Rabat players, also played at Stade de , where he was crowned second scorer in the French championship with 23 goals in 1961-1962 and third scorer with 24 goals in 1962- 1963.
In 1963, he joined the Monaco club before returning to Reims for the following season. He ended his playing career at FUS de Rabat from 1965 to 1970. He subsequently became coach of this club and then other Moroccan teams. He remains in the annals of French football as the eleventh best scorer of all time in the French championship with 173 goals scored in 293 French championship matches, but also in those of Moroccan football as winner of the Mohammed V Cup in 1962 and the Coupe du Trône in 1967. He also wore the jersey of the Moroccan national team from 1960 to 1970.
