In 2023, according to a report from the collective “Les Morts de la rue” relayed by France 3 Pays-de-la-Loire, at least 735 homeless people died in France, including 26 in Pays-de-la-Loire. In Maine-et-Loire, several deaths have been recorded among young people.
Expelled from reception facilities or without family support, they are frequently faced with extreme living conditions, moving from the street to emergency accommodation, often with tragic outcomes.
Dramatically reduced life expectancy
In this region, the life expectancy of homeless people is dramatically reduced, averaging 48.8 years, well below the 79.9 years observed for the general population. The lack of sustainable solutions accentuates this vulnerability.
In Maine-et-Loire, some young adults, without resources or access to permanent housing, alternate between temporary accommodation or the street. Their precariousness exposes them to increased risks of violence, isolation and deterioration of health. The collective calls for reinforced action to provide dignified living conditions and fight against this phenomenon, which is increasingly visible in the department and the region.
