Violent thunderstorms brought heavy rain, hail and thousands of lightning strikes to French-speaking Switzerland on Sunday until the early evening. The Geneva region was particularly affected. Sections of the road were flooded. The Geneva-La Praille exit of the A1 motorway has been closed since early Monday and road traffic in the area is disrupted.

The last residual showers should fall early in the morning, indicates the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MétéoSuisse on its online site. They will be followed by fairly sunny weather. Some precipitation will again be possible in the Jura in the evening. It will be 22 degrees Celsius at most.

Sudden thunderstorms

These bad weather conditions did not cause any accidents or cause any casualties. But the videos and photos that have flooded social networks since Sunday attest to the suddenness of these storms.

The heavy rains brought hail in places and thousands of lightning strikes. Until 8:30 p.m., around 18,000 lightning bolts tore through the sky, according to SRF Meteo. The Nyon (VD) measuring station recorded the heaviest precipitation, with 50 millimeters, the region having suffered the brunt of the rain. Elsewhere in Switzerland, hailstones up to 5 cm in diameter fell on Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland.

Switzerland is currently located exactly on the border between the cool air from the northwest and the warm air from the Mediterranean, which causes this stormy situation.

Mudslide

In neighboring France, a portion of the A40 motorway, towards Chamonix between exits 13 Saint-Julien-en-Genevois and 14 Annemasse, in Haute-Savoie, was cut off on Sunday evening due to a mudslide caused by bad weather, indicates the ATMB motorway network. The event did not cause any accidents or injuries, the network said.
