State commitment to sustainable solutions to floods, says Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation

The Minister of Hydraulics and Sanitation, Cheikh Tidiane Dièye, affirmed during a visit to Keur Massar, in the suburbs of Dakar, that the State is committed to finding structural and sustainable solutions to cope to floods.

“We are working on structural and sustainable solutions to counter flooding after this rainy season,” he told journalists at the end of a tour of flood-prone sites and sanitation sites.

The minister inspected the construction sites of the catchment area, the Thiaroye Gare hospital canal, the exit 10 basin of the toll highway, the Amina basin between the Madiabel and Baye Niass districts in Keur Aladji Pathé, as well as as the Yékini land in Keur Massar north.

“We are developing policies for sustainable solutions against flooding,” added the minister, specifying that these measures will be put in place after the rainy season.

He expressed confidence that the phenomenon of flooding will be controlled in the years to come with the new policies envisaged. However, he stressed that it is difficult to definitively eliminate these natural phenomena.

The minister called for support from the Senegalese population for these initiatives, stressing that the government alone cannot resolve these complex problems. He stressed the importance of community engagement, behavior change and citizenship to transform the country.
