Firefighters specializing in forest fires had to intervene this Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the gates of a castle located near Toulouse. It was a fire in tall grass.
The flames covered one and a half hectares, this Tuesday, June 25, 2024 afternoon, in the town of Cornebarrieu, near Toulouse. The Haute-Garonne firefighters were called around 3:17 p.m. for a fire in tall grass. Address of their intervention: Laran Castle.
According to the Haute-Garonne departmental fire and rescue service, the fire threatened a total surface area of eight hectares which was ultimately able to be preserved thanks to the intervention of nine fire fighters.
“Thanks to the concerted action of our teams, the spread to an undergrowth and a wheat field was only limited.“, indicates Sdis 31.
Although it is not a protected monument, Laran Castle nonetheless remains an element of Cornebarrieu’s heritage. The first building was built in the 16th century by Domenge de Laran, a rich fabric merchant, member of the commercial bourgeoisie of Toulouse.
At the time, according to the UrbanHist website, the domain includes a dwelling house with tenants’ accommodation, barn, winery, chapel and dovecote, 150 acres of cultivated land, arable land and vineyards, orchard and vegetable garden.
The castle was razed at the beginning of the 19th century. Guillaume de Bellegarde, mayor of Toulouse from 1806 to 1811, will rebuild a residence more akin to a mansion.
