Summer is having trouble setting in. But with the first warm weather, the tiger mosquitoes come back to our fond memories. In Saint-Orens (Haute-Garonne), the residents and the town are looking for a show.

In the heart of Saint-Orens (Haute-Garonne), Maryse’s garden has taken on its summer colors. But the first warm weather is also for this resident of the town the signal of the arrival of mosquitoes. She tries, as best she can, to fight against this pest which prevents her from enjoying the exterior of her house.

For example, she chose to modify her watering system. “I use a system with upside-down bottles to water my plants. It avoids stagnant water. Mosquitoes, the slightest drop of water, they love it”she explains.

But no miracle solutions outside. Maryse believes that you can only endure if you want to enjoy your garden. “For the interior, mosquito nets are the most radical solution at the moment. That’s all there is. Outside when we’re invaded…What to do?”deplores this resident of Saint-Orens.

A town bordered by a river, surrounded by vegetation. The town hall therefore decided to take the bull by the horns by bringing in a specialized company.

She intervenes once a month from April to October to install organic nesting traps.

“We set traps in wooded and cool areas. These are resting areas for mosquitoes. They wait here before reproducing and biting. We set around fifty traps as well as an anti-larval treatment on identified areas “details the manager of the company which operates in Saint Orens and around ten municipalities around Toulouse.

First effects of this system? Residents are complaining less than in previous years, says Agnès Mestres, deputy mayor of Saint Orens in charge of green spaces and biodiversity. “It’s true that we have fewer reports this season from people complaining about the presence of mosquitoes. We hope that it’s thanks to our treatment. We have installed egg-laying traps near the watercourse, in the cemetery and in the woods.”

The city has decided to work harder this year in the fight against the tiger mosquito, which began in 2017. The investment is 2000 to 3000 euros. An essential investment in this town conducive to its proliferation with 50% of the territory covered in wooded areas.
