The creation of an industrial pigsty, containing a thousand pigs over 1,000 m², is causing concern in Vicq-sur-Breuilh. Residents denounce nuisances, animal abuse and pollution. They are calling for a public inquiry.

There is a sense of unease at the moment in Vicq-sur-Breuilh (1,400 inhabitants), and particularly in the hamlets of La Trémie and Brégéras, the village where the project to establish an industrial pigsty is located, led by Gaec Berland, farmers of the commune.

30,000 signatures on the petition

The protest is growing among local residents and residents, who take a dim view of the installation of this industrial farm of a thousand pigs, crammed into 1,000 m², without ever seeing the outside.

An online petition has already collected more than 30,000 signatures, mobilizing opponents across .

This will destroy the soil, as we see in .

“It’s a factory right on our doorstep. This will destroy the soil, as we see in Brittany. This region is saturated and projects are moving here. We fear pollution of the soil and water, particularly for the surrounding waterways,” denounces Patrick, a resident of Brégéras.

“Animal welfare will be called into question, it is absurd to embark on such a project. We discussed it with the farmer, he says he will respect the standards, but we don't believe it. In addition, this production consumes thousands of cubic meters of water, and we, residents, are being asked for water restrictions, it’s crazy” supports Éric.

The collective denounces polluting industrial farming, its nuisance for around fifty local residents, and the animal abuse of pigs.

“Between the nuisances, pollution and animal abuse, what image will this give of our municipality? », worries Laurent.

The group of opponents wants the opening of a public inquiry, a procedure which is not obligatory for a farm of less than 2,000 pigs.

Residents want to work together to appeal and slow down this project.

Start of work in a few months

Even if it will be responsible for granting the building permit, the town hall of Vicq-sur-Breuilh and its mayor Christine de Neville have not taken a position.
