It’s always an important moment: the big departure. This year especially with regard to the first stage very difficult expected by the peloton.

The guiboles are ready to climb mountains, the bikes are sharpened and the start of the 111th edition of the Great Loop will be given this Saturday, June 29, 2024.

here is the detailed route and stages not to miss.

Italian departure, Burgundy in the headlines

The great novelty of this edition is obviously the start given from Florence, Italy.

A great cycling nation, La Botte will host three stages before the Grande Boucle returns to France. The transalpine country is therefore in the spotlight this year, but the other star of the event is the Burgundy with four stagesincluding the very beautiful one between the medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois and Colombey-les-Deux-Églises.

An arrival outside the capital

The Alpswith two passages, and the Pyrenees will certainly be key moments of this Tour de France, it is often on the mountainous slopes that the Yellow jersey is won.

As for several years, The Tour promises to be very demanding and the plain stages, called transition stages, are becoming increasingly rare.

This year, even the last stage will be decisive for the final victory. No arrival on the cobblestones of the Champs-Élysées due to the Olympic Games being held a week later, but a time trial between Monaco and Nice.

If the Parisian victory is generally more about prestige than interest for the general classification, the finish in the time trial could change the destiny of the Tour in the event of a fairly tight gap before the start of this last round.

Some steps not to miss

If many beautiful stages are on the program, the first one will already be very difficult and you will need to be in good shape.

3,6000 meters of positive altitude difference are on the program between Florence and Rimini. Seven coasts are listed in the reliefs of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. You will have to be very strong to grab the first yellow jersey of the edition.

“The Tour has never climbed so high, so quickly,” recalled Christian Prudhomme during the presentation of this fourth stage. Already, from the high mountains. Between Pinerolo and Valloire, the favorites will already be on the attack with the ascent of the terrible, but no less legendary, Col du Galibier (23 km at 5.1%). An arrival at the summit. Promising.

There will also be the 9th stage with the white paths around Troyes, where punctures could reshuffle the cards.

The eleventh stepwith very little flat, could also offer a spectacle. Between Évaux-les-Bains and Le Lioran, 4,350 meters of positive elevation gain, “the riders will be constantly engaged”, promises the director of the Tour.

The last 50 kilometers will be particularly breathtaking with four climbs on the program: the Cols de Néronne (3.8 km at 9.1%), Pas de Peyrol (5.4 km at 8.1%), du Perthus (4, 4 km at 7.9%) and Font de Cère (3.3 km at 5.8%).

Of course, we will scrutinize the 19th and 20th stages, respectively between Embrun and Isola 2000, and Nice and the Col de La Couillole, where the hopes of winning the Yellow jersey could well end. Unless, therefore, it is during the final time trial, the finish of which will be played out in the streets of Nice.
