The 2024 hurricane season has well and truly begun. Two tropical waves, No. 5 and No. 6, are currently circulating in and around the Lesser Antilles. One chases the other and both concern the islands of Guadeloupe, as well as the northern communities, placed on yellow alert for “heavy rain and storms”.

The islands of Guadeloupe, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin are currently abundantly watered.
The cause: tropical wave No. 5, followed by its sister, No. 6.

The communities of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin have been placed on yellow weather alert for “heavy rain and thunderstorms”, this Monday morning (June 3, 2024). “The meeting of an unstable South-East flow behind tropical wave no. 5 and a rain-storm front coming from the North generates stormy showers in the North of the Antilles Arc., indicates Météo France. The effects of these combined phenomena are, for the moment, expected to last until the end of Tuesday afternoon.

The risk of storms temporarily disappears this morning and for a good part of the afternoon. But the storms are expected to get closer at the end of the day and next night, still under the influence of the front circulating nearby, but also due to the arrival of tropical wave No. 6 from the South-East.

Tomorrow Tuesday, the meeting of fronts and waves, in the North of the Arc, will maintain a risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms with, as a result, possible significant accumulations of rain in a short time.

Yellow vigilance for “heavy rain and thunderstorms” has been in force since Saturday afternoon, in the islands of Guadeloupe. The archipelago is facing a transition between tropical waves No. 5 and No. 6.

The calm of the night continues this Monday morning, behind the first of these waves, forecasters explain. A few sustained showers, even stormy, are expected again from this afternoon and, especially, next night, with the arrival of tropical wave number 6.
Tomorrow Tuesday, the showers coming from the South-East are likely to persist in certain areas, to the point of producing significant quantities of water in a short time.
Improvement is expected Tuesday evening, or Wednesday morning.

There were no significant accumulations recorded overnight.
On Sunday, on the other hand, significant accumulations were recorded:

  • 81 mm (including 78.5 mm between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.) at the Saint-François station (Aérodrome);
  • 71 mm in Saint-François (Reneville);
  • 51 mm at Morne à l’Eau (Blanchet);
  • 47.5 mm Mold;
  • And 26 mm in Abymes (Chazeau).
