(Keystone-ATS) The JazzAscona festival will vibrate the shores of Lake Maggiore for the 40th time at the end of June. This anniversary will be marked by “the largest street art exhibition dedicated to New Orleans-style jazz ever organized,” the organizers announced on Wednesday.

Around forty photographs of artists who performed in Ascona will be exhibited throughout the historic center of the city. These are works by the Italian-Swiss artist Yuri Catania, known for his work in formal XL, the organizers specify in a press release.

Other works by Yuri Catania will be presented at the municipal museum of modern art during and after the festival, before a retrospective which will be dedicated to him this year in New Orleans.

The festival itself plans nearly 300 concerts from June 20 to 29, scattered throughout the city, from official stages on the banks of the lake to the city center, including a dozen public establishments.

Nnavy, James Brown and Piaf

More than 350 artists and around sixty groups will travel to this festival which will be completely free, for the third year in a row.

A strong delegation is expected from the “sister city” of New Orleans, including “the queen of traditional jazz” Meschiya Lake and saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson.

On the Swiss side, the Swiss Armed Forces Big Band will give two concerts with American trombonist Wayne Bergeron, while the Swiss Jazz Orchestra, considered the best big band in the country, will receive the Swiss Jazz Award 2024 during its performance in Ascona on June 28.

Among the guests on the bill also includes Vaudoise Nnavy, presented as “one of the most promising new artists of our country’s soul/R&B music scene”, a tribute to James Brown, as well as a project “Meme-Edith Piaf, the jazz soul” by Ticino accordionist Danilo Boggini with singer Beatrice Zanolini.
