The team is playing successfully at the moment, is approachable and likeable to the fans and the mood within the team is also good. This is not a given for the DFB team after the sometimes disastrous tournament performances in recent years.

The German team is one of the favorites to win the European Championship and has sparked enthusiasm among the fans. The day after the 2-0 victory over Hungary in the second group match, the DFB team was greeted with cheers and applause at the public training session.

The past has shown that the mood can also be bad despite sporting success. And this is also underlined by new statements from long-time “kicker” reporter Karl-Heinz Wild in the podcast “Toni Kroos – The Underrated One”. He remembers the 2012 European Championship and Toni Kroos’ absolute low point in the DFB team.

DFB team: Toni Kroos and other stars are “furious”

After an exhilarating 2010 World Cup, the DFB team is one of the favourites to go to the 2012 European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine. Toni Kroos was a regular player for FC Bayern that season and even reached the Champions League final with the Munich team, which they lost in dramatic fashion to FC Chelsea.

However, national coach Jogi Löw did not rely on him. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira were set to play in central midfield. In front of them, Mesut Özil was firmly planned as a creative playmaker.

In the first two group matches, Kroos played for three and nine minutes. In an interview with the “tz” newspaper, he lost his temper. “It’s not satisfactory at all. Especially after the season I’ve played, it’s logical that I want to play. We’ve taken the lead twice now. I don’t really think we’re playing outstanding football. The national coach knows what he has in me.”

Toni Kroos’s angry speech doesn’t achieve much at first. He plays six minutes in the last group match and not at all in the quarter-final against Greece. “It was difficult for Toni that Schweinsteiger wasn’t fit either and he still wasn’t allowed to play,” says Karl-Heinz Wild.

But he is not the only one who is frustrated. According to the long-time “kicker” reporter, the mood in the team is not good, there are some stars who are “furious”. “I can remember cancelled interviews with Reus and Götze”says Wild. Because even though they won the German championship and the DFB Cup with BVB, they are not allowed to play regularly under Löw.

Wild also adds: “Schweinsteiger later said that he had noticed exactly who jumped up when goals were scored and who stayed seated. And I think that was a very difficult time for Toni.”

DFB team: Toni Kroos dismissed “stupid question”

In the semi-final against Italy, Kroos is suddenly allowed to play from the start. Jogi Löw and his coaching team have a new tactical idea. Wild says: “Jogi found the philosopher’s stone and overreached himself.” The then 22-year-old’s main task was to prevent Italy’s playmaker Andrea Pirlo from controlling the Italians’ game – and he failed.

Germany has no chance and loses 2-1. It is the icing on the cake of a disastrous season for Toni Kroos in terms of titles. Defeat in the Champions League final, runner-up in the championship with FC Bayern and defeat in the cup final.

After the international match, reporters asked him about this record and he reacted unexpectedly. Karl-Heinz Wild can still remember the scene when Kroos was asked how it felt to have finished second four times:

“Then Toni said: ‘Hello, what’s the point of the question? We didn’t come second, we were knocked out in the semi-finals. So theoretically we can only come third or fourth.’ That was actually all he said and he thought to himself: stupid question. Then he carried on as if nothing bad had happened.”
