UThe first appeal was lodged with the Electoral Disputes Council, following the elections in Hasselt. This was confirmed by Filip Van Acker, first president of the Dienst van de Bestuursrechtscolleges (DBRC).
The president did not wish to comment on the content of the appeal. Only candidates – therefore aggrieved people – can lodge appeals. The Electoral Disputes Council is only competent for disputes related to the administrative organization of local elections. This includes, for example, vote counts, but also electoral expenses. The illegal recruitment of proxies, which has sparked controversy in several municipalities, is a legal matter.
Filing an appeal is not particularly exceptional. In previous local elections, there were around fifty, according to Van Acker. “The objective is to make a decision quickly,” explains the first president of the DBRC, “so that the municipalities concerned can react without delay. »
