The early frost over several nights in a row after very hot days caused the loss of 60 to 70% of the 2024 harvest depending on the grape variety.

The Coteaux de Glanes winegrowers, united in the Vignerons du Haut-Quercy cooperative, have finally completed the bottling of the 2022 vintage red wines “Fondateur” and “Quatre Saisons” and the 2023 vintage wines, white chenin and chardonnay, rosé Gourmandise and 60% of traditional red. The remaining 40% will be bottled later when they are mature. Thus, some 350,000 bottles have been labeled and are ready for sale.

60 to 70% losses

The early frost on several nights in a row after very hot days has already caused the loss of 60 to 70% of the 2024 harvest depending on the grape variety, and particularly on plots on the lower slopes of Glanes. The upper vineyard, a quarter of the surface area, has not suffered too much but the winegrowers will only be able to check its real condition in June. On three hectares of vines, a watering system had been installed.

Started on frosty nights, this fairly expensive system proved to be effective because it helped save these vines. The 2024 harvests promise to be poor in terms of quantity, that’s for sure. As for the quality, it will depend on the next few days, if the rain continues to be too heavy, then on the weather conditions… We still have to wait three months.

The Coteaux de Glanes cooperative is evolving. After thirty years of presidency, Laurent Cerou retired and a young man, Jérémy Zamarreno, was able to take over his operation. In seven years, four young people have been able to settle in, coached by the cooperative. The new president of the coop, confirmed at the 2024 general meeting, is now Bruno Canet.

With the last frosts, the Coop will have to anticipate, postpone investments and slow down sales a little. To adapt to climate change, she is studying the planting of other grape varieties, while remaining within the local specifications of the slopes of Glanes. Already, Gamay, the base of Gourmandise rosé, is less acidic than fifteen years ago. In decline in the vineyard for a few years, after this observation, it was successfully resumed! This year again, the coop’s winegrowers, after having collected the 400 bottles deposited in the caves of Très, proceeded to install 400 new bottles of the 2022 vintage. In an atmosphere of constant cold and very humid, the aging takes place. ‘finds it accelerated.
