The new customary chief “Teen” Alassane Djiby Gaye was inducted a few days ago by a college of dignitaries from this village in the commune of Médina Ndiathbé (North), in the department of Podor, noted the Aps. The ceremony took place in the presence of Khady Diène Gaye, the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Director General of the National Agency for the Promotion of Youth Employment (Anpej), Sinna Amadou Gaye, and administrative and local authorities. A large delegation from the town of Kaédi, capital of the Gorgol region in Mauritania, took part in the ceremony. The title of “Teen” also exists in Kaédi, a Mauritanian town bordering the Matam region. The two localities have very strong family ties. “This induction ceremony of the “Teen” of Dounguel is part of the promotion of our cultural and historical heritage. Our traditions carry a range of values ​​to perpetuate and pass on to younger generations,” argued Khady Diène Gaye.

The minister believes she has understood “the role of our traditional leaders in the conservation and perpetuation of our memory and our ancestral values”, which can be a source of wisdom and balance for society. “It is important to celebrate them and teach the values ​​they embody. There is a need to re-mobilize youth and women to develop our country, based on values ​​of dignity and honor,” said Ms. Gaye. Idy Gaye, member of the College of Dignitaries, explained that the “Teen” who is chosen from the Gaye family is also the village chief, therefore “an administrative authority, a basic pillar of the Administration”.

The seven-meter white turban, symbol of his enthronement, was placed on his head by Daouda Gaye and Issa Gaye of the Boubou Gaye family, following custom, to the rhythm of Pekaan, an artistic genre specific to the Fouta fishing community , called Soubalbé. In his speech, the “Teen” of Dounguel, Alassane Djiby Gaye, promised “to fulfill the role of customary leader with dignity”. He said he wanted to work “with intelligence, fairness and fairness for the economic, cultural and social development of his constituents”.
