On the fisheries issue, Morocco is not in a logic of reaction in its relations with its partners. The agreement signed with Russia and having to expire at the end October 2024 was extended well before the verdict of the Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) which invalidated the agricultural and fishing agreements between the Kingdom and l’UElearns Médias24 from reliable sources.

“The two countries were not going to wait until the fateful date of the end of October approached to examine the question,” indicate our sources who affirm that a large exchange of visits took place, intensively, during the last weeks of the month of September. And the two countries are already thinking about after 2024.

“Another agreement of at least 4 years is practically certain, but our wish is to lead to a longer period,” says a reliable Russian source.

The current agreement, therefore in force until the end of December, was signed by the two countries on September 14, 2020.

It provides for the payment of an annual contribution to Morocco of the order of 7 million dollars and is surrounded by several conditions imposed on the Russian fleet authorized to fish in the Atlantic economic zoneincluding off the coast Sahara.

The annual quota must not exceed the 140,000 tonnes and is essentially made up of sardines and sardinellas (23%), mackerel, horse mackerel and anchovies (75%) and various sockets (2%).

Each Russian fishing boat is also obliged to pay a license and pay a fee equivalent to 17,5% of the market value of its fish catches in addition to the obligation to use at least 16 Moroccan fishermen by boat.
