Depression Kirk: several provinces on orange alert, update on the situation

The IRM has broadened its alerts in the face of the significant risk of precipitation which will affect our country this Wednesday and Thursday.

The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) is warning of continued rain carried by the Kirk Low between Wednesday morning and Thursday morning. Heavy rain will cross much of the southeast of the country on Wednesday afternoon, says the Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI).

In Florenville, in the province of Luxembourg, our journalist takes stock of the situation this evening in the south of the country. She mentions in particular the different alerts in the provinces.

There are still three provinces which are on orange alert: Namur, Liège and Luxembourg. A yellow alert had already been issued in other provinces such as Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant, Brussels, Hainaut and Limburg. These alerts will remain in effect until 9 a.m. tomorrow. In the coming hours, heavy rainfall can still be expected. For example, in areas where the yellow alert is issued, 25 to 50 liters per square meter can be expected. For Namur and Liège, this could go up to 80 liters. In the province of Luxembourg, up to 100 liters. This area is most affected by the Kirk Depression. Rivers are expected to overflow in the evening and even overnight. The firefighters have already intervened around twenty times for pumping..

The governor of the province of Luxembourg, Olivier Schmitz, spoke about these bad weather. He warns citizens and invites them to be safe.

We must first be aware that the risk today is serious. There is still a little time before nightfall to carry out common sense actions or small jobs in order to limit the risk. It seems essential to me that everyone be vigilant until tomorrow, at the end of the day. This is not to create fear, but rather to encourage vigilance, preparation and caution” he said.

This Wednesday evening and most of the night

It will continue to rain in many areas. Most of the precipitation will still fall in the southeast of the country. Only at the end of the night will the rain move towards Germany. Minimum temperatures will be around 9 degrees in the Ardennes heights, around 14 degrees near the coast and between 12 and 13 degrees in most other places. The wind will blow moderately from the northern sector, but gusts of 50 to 60 km/h will be possible on the coast and in the Ardennes.

On Thursday, the sky will be cloudy with showers coming from the North Sea. These showers could be intense and locally accompanied by a clap of thunder, while maximum temperatures will vary between 10 and 14 degrees.
