In Marrakech, energy links are being forged between Senegal and Morocco. Cheikh Niang, Cheikh Niang, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of Senegal, unveils bold ambitions for renewable and strategic cooperation at the ‘World Power-to-X’ Summit, marking a new era for the African energy future.

During the 4th edition of the “World Power-to-X” Summit in Marrakech, Cheikh Niang, Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines of Senegal, highlighted the depth of relations between the Republic of Senegal and the Kingdom of Morocco. This cooperation, rooted in decades of solid partnership, is being strengthened today in strategic sectors, notably renewable energies and energy efficiency.

A growing energy partnership

Senegal and Morocco collaborate closely in the field of renewable energies, where the share of solar energy in the Senegalese energy mix already reaches 30%, with the objective of increasing to 40% by 2030. According to Cheikh Niang, the Morocco, through institutions such as MASEN (Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy) and the Ministry of Energy, plays a key role in this technical and strategic support.

The Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project

Beyond renewable energies, Cheikh Niang recalled the importance of the structuring gas pipeline project linking Nigeria to Morocco, a crucial axis for the energy development of the region. This project could allow Senegalese natural gas to be consumed not only in Morocco, but also in other countries crossed by this infrastructure.

Objectives for 2030

While Senegal is committed to intensifying its efforts to reach 40% of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030, cooperation with Morocco remains a priority. “We intend to intensify this cooperation with the Kingdom to achieve our objectives, not only in renewable energies, but also in energy efficiency,” declared Cheikh Niang.
