Senegal: former President Sall’s coalition opposed to the Prime Minister’s candidacy in the November legislative elections

The “Tako Walo” coalition (Together to save Senegal) filed an appeal before the Constitutional Council against the candidacy of the current Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, in the legislative elections scheduled for November 17.

This coalition, led by former Senegalese President Macky Sall, includes the former ruling party, the Alliance for the Republic, and the Senegalese Democratic Party of former head of state Abdoulaye Wade, who supported the current president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, during the presidential election of March 24.

The Alliance considered that Ousmane Sonko, the leader of the Pastif coalition, was ineligible due to his six-month suspended prison sentence, mainly for defamation.

The Constitutional Council will have to examine this appeal before the elections of November 17.

The Interior Ministry approved 41 lists of candidates for this election, while several applications were deemed inadmissible.

The ruling party, Pastif, officially presented its list of candidates, headed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.

On September 12, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dissolved the National Assembly, elected in 2022, and called new elections on November 17 for the election of new deputies.
